In 2021, the International Master Gardener Conference will be held virtually. Though a virtual conference was not our original plan, we are excited for this unique opportunity to bring our speakers, workshops, and networking opportunities to even more Master Gardeners at a greatly-reduced cost from attending the in-person event. All sessions will be recorded and available for viewing later. We hope our decision to move to a virtual platform will make the conference more accessible to Master Gardeners near and far.

We are planning a unique and creative virtual conference that will offer not only the chance to attend live webinars and workshops, but also opportunities to socialize with and learn from EMGs from around the nation, to learn about gardening in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and to participate in interactive activities such as iNaturalist and social media challenges.


How will the virtual conference be hosted?

After registration, you will gain access to our virtual conference portal where you will be able to join live webinars during IMGC and find links to recorded webinars after IMGC concludes. Our portal will also contain other information and conference extras, such as special networking sessions and virtual conference challenges.

What’s the virtual schedule?

Our preliminary virtual schedule includes two sessions per day with a few special evening events. We are taking great care to prevent “Zoom fatigue” and are limiting total daily conference time to no more than a few hours!

Our schedule contains:

  • 5 keynote speakers;
  • 30+ concurrent speakers, divided into five sessions. You can choose the session you’d like to attend live and go back and watch other sessions’ recordings later;
  • 3 opportunities for small group networking sessions;
  • Two special panel events;
  • Opening and closing sessions;
  • Optional workshops on Sunday, September 12;
  • Opportunities to explore gardening in the Commonwealth of Virginia at your own pace; and
  • A variety of optional conference challenges & extras, including an iNaturalist project and recipes highlighting Virginia agricultural products.

Our full conference program will be released in March 2021.

Will sessions be recorded?

Yes! If you register for IMGC, you will have access to our library of keynote and concurrent session recordings for a period of time after the conference concludes. That means you have access to all of our concurrent sessions!

Session recordings are only available to registrants and will not be shared with the public or otherwise.

How will registration work?

Registration opens April 5, 2021. In order to stay within the limits of our online platform and ensure we can offer support for registrants, registration is capped at 2,500 participants and will therefore be first come, first served.  

Certain conference workshops may have additional costs and lower capacity limits; those will also be first come, first served.

You will be able to register and pay for your conference via a link we send out on April 5, 2021. You will then gain access to our virtual conference platform, where you will be able to join our live sessions during the conference and find other conference information and extras. You will not need to register in advance for the concurrent sessions you plan to attend–you can decide during the conference which session to join!

What about the Search for Excellence? SFE will go forward but with amendments to submission criteria to accommodate our virtual format. Winners will be displayed virtually!
